The Future of Video Editing
Video editing, which is the manipulation of video footage has come a long way, from the time when people had to use scissors to edit video, by cutting tapes in sequential order, to now, where editing is as simple as importing a video in a timeline, doing some cuts with a computer and exporting. and while the task of video editing still requires skill, much has been done to simplify this visual art.
My passion for video started when I saw how powerful video was, when it came to storytelling, by skillfully cutting, special effects, you can tell a story with much more impact and realism, that's why I loved video so much. It engages both the visual and auditory senses and creates a lasting impression on the viewer.
They say a picture speaks a thousand words, but I believe video speaks books.No wonder all social media networks have incorporated some aspects of video into their platforms.
As a video editor and a creator, there are a thousand stories I want to tell, yet each time I struggle to do this because video editing takes quite some time. On average a simple video will take twice the footage length to edit it while it can be 10x the footage time if the video is more complex. Colour correction, sound design, special effects, all these take time.
By no means am I saying that we were better off with the original Moviola, no! So much progress has been made, in fact, I am so much grateful for the many editing software that has made life so much easy.
The first video editing software I used was Corel Video Studio, easy editing software that didn't require so much learning. Currently, I mostly use either Adobe Premier Pro and or WeVideo.Now you may be asking, why would I use two different editing software, sometimes even complementary.
The answer to that question sheds light on my quest for a newer, more efficient editing tool, that I believe is in the making but not here yet. One thing that takes time when it comes to editing, is when you want to use Stock Footage. The issue is not that Adobe doesn't have the processing power to load this footage, the issue is that it takes time to search for the right footage and then to then import that into the workspace. While most software has plugins that can do all that, that is an additional cost, perhaps not in time but in money.
So we are looking for software that is all in one, a software that just doesn't give you a robust machine to work with, but a software that helps you think, a software that helps you create. And in case you haven't picked it yet, I am talking about artificial intelligence.
To an extent, most video editors have implemented some level of artificial intelligence. From simple tasks like face detection to more complex tasks like automatic scene detection. These are some features that are making video editing so much easier right now.
What I think the future for video will be is this; an All in One artificial intelligent video editor that, you give footage and does both the machine and mental processing for you. Think of software you give a video title and based on the title finds footage and music that speaks to the title and then does cuts and transitions, even colour grade that matches the mood.
I am excited this year with the Adobe Sensei powered speech to text feature thats launching this year. I believe this will be a heavy time-saver, and only reflects the future of video editing.
